The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

Do you teach your students "How to Learn?" and if so, how do you teach this skill?

I find many of my post-secondary students missing the what to do, how to do it, and why do it (perhaps that way) regarding how to learn effectively and efficiently. I find this true across groups, inner city to burbs to rural students, teens just out of high school through retired professionals.

For example, most students I talk to: pick up their texts, read assigned pages and do assigned problems. Before a test, many will review the summary section as well. But the idea of before a class begins, scanning the layout and structure of the text and chapters, and how to read a chapter for effective understanding and retention is not something they are familiar with. Now, I spend a portion of my time with them teaching what I consider a basic life skill of today - "How to Learn" with the what, how and why including strategies and tips. (I will be posting some of these at Explorations with Prof E."

My question to the PLN is do you teach these skills (which are independent of subject matter) and if so, what do you teach and how?

(I also talk more about this on the Digin4ed blog.)

Taking this a step further, when we are moving away from textbook use in classrooms, how does one prepare with no text handy? In College, its easy to look ahead on the syllabus and figure out what to read up on next, but in high school is it this obvious?
