The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

An interesting theme came up while I was interviewing a principal friend of mine. She was discussing how she has begun to feel defeated because  of the new requirement our state has that all students will take the state assessments on line. She was saying that this will simply murder their school performance. Her student population is close to being 100% poverty, there is no parental support at all at home, and they only get computer time in school  a couple times a week due to too few computers and too many kids. They don't have computers at home so there is no where to practice. She said her students are still trying to find letters in their names on the keyboard. How she is able to compete with the magnet programs in the district which tend to draw a more middle class population, who are more likely to have computers and parent involvement. How can a district allow neighborhood schools flounder and fail while knowing that the magnet programs are going to soar ? This is a large urban district but we preach about equity, we preach about what our students need and yet within the same district there is a vast canyon of difference. It isn't just equity of instruction and opportunities but equity of resources and funding.

I would like to know what others think about this and what, if any, possible solutions to bringing quality instruction, materials, resources, and funding to all schools, in poor, crime ridden neighborhoods as well as the magnet programs, within the same district.
