My day job is a student liaison for an online school.  My job ranges from counselor, mentor, registrar, tech help, etc.  I find that 90% of my day however, is spent trying to motivate online learners who are isolated, having a hard time navigating, and just really finding it difficult to learn the new online environment. 

So how do you motivate your online learners?

Thank you for the link! I completely agree with your steps to motivate students.  Most importantly, I agree with number 1.  Students need to feel confident and successful, only then will they be motivated to learn more.  Thank you!

You need to engage them in conversation and ask them about the difficulties they face while studying. You can conduct online quiz which they can participate in and win something. They can maintain an online diary of what they studies for the day and you can check that and reply with positive remarks. 

I don't teach an online course, but the only ways I know of to legitimately motivate students are engagement and relationships. Extrinsic rewards like points or prizes are empty. They are a cheap substitute that distracts students from the value of learning. If we want our students to learn, we need to teach them to be curious and give them a reason to care. Develop content that makes your students think. Make sure they see the connection between learning it and succeeding beyond the classroom. More importantly, show your students that you are a human being behind that computer screen and that you recognize their humanity. Share with them and invite them to share with you.

I guess the real question is, can we do all of this online? What do we sacrifice by moving school out of the classroom?

I have had good luck motivating Gr. 4 and 5 elementary school students by pairing them up with an intranet of college students, who read and react positively and constructively to their writing and art work.  There are many fascinating things when this online connection happens.  Elementary students write at 1:00 pm and college students respond at 1:00 a.m.  Learning is not bound by the time of the school day. Elementary students work hard when their "older peers" are looking forward to their work (and their next work, and their next work.)  Elementary students crave positive feedback and college students are a tremendously authentic and supportive audience who care a great deal about helping aspiring readers, writers and artists.  If you ever want to try this project, I suggest partnering with a local college and starting with a small core group.  You will be amazed at the genuine motivation and connection between "younger" and "older" peers.  Good luck!

I love this idea! I remember being in elementary school and having a "buddy" from the high school and I loved it.  How do you find college students to work with them? Is it a program, or self-initiated?

My current teaching position is teaching by distance. The motivation is to get the Higher School Certificate at the end of the course. I find because the materials are outdated, not digital, and there is no communty of learners that it is much harder to raise the students motivation to go the extra mile. I am in the middle of updating the courses I teach to a digital, text book based approach. Moodle is the platform I am going to use as it is user friendly and has many applications. My little community of learners will be able to converse through online forums. Also, giving structured online discussion topics is good. As liason; set up your own similar site.

I teach online regularly and have found that the best way to engage your students online in synchronous time is to  get them to interact with you either in Text, audio or on a white board. Depending how many in the room will determine the type of interaction. Do this at the very start of the course a quick icebreaker about where the student is from can work well. Also there is nothing worse than being in a webinar and just being lectured.. Boring! you will loose your students interest. A student interacts if they feel free to ask questions and be involved with the course as it progresses.

Develop a community and encourage collaboration add that as part of course content.

We often use Moodle and Blackboard Collaborate combination. Or Google sites,Ning and Blackboard Collaborate.

At present we are developing on line course content within Wordpress and Moodle with blackboard collaborate for teachers who wish to develop their digital literacy.

I would recommend an icebreaker. I am an online student. My instructor from my University of Akron course asked us to use VOKI at www.voki.com to introduce ourselves and what our professional interests were.
