Hello everyone.  We have started conversations about integrating some kind of tablet--iPads or Androids--into our curriculum.  I'm looking for advice in a couple of areas.  We're a K-12 school, so I think we have different needs and perhaps different processes for implementation across our divisions.  What might work for elementary might not work at the high school level.  So sorting through that is problematic.  I'm looking for ways people have implemented (or are planning to implement) an iPad or tablet program.  Did you start with a pilot?  How were the teachers involved?  Are all teachers involved are just "tech-savvy" teachers? Did you plan on having a cart or lab that was shared or look at one-to-one?  And what about funding?  Would tablets replace existing equipment or be in addition to?


You can see I have more questions than answers.  We have some ideas floating around here, but I'm looking for more ideas, especially at places with experience.  If anyone is nearby and could host a visit early next year, I'd love to see a program like this in action.

We are about to trial the use of iPads in our reading program (as eReaders) with Year 7 students and will then look at how they can be used in other areas of the curriculum.  I have been collecting information on apps and also some information on trials currently being conducted in schools within our state (Australia) and the '21 steps...' of implementing 1:1 devices.  I have put it all together on our school elearning wiki (  "iPads for learning" page.   You are welcome to look at what I have so far and I'd certainly be interested in how your own program runs.  You are most welcome to come visit us too!!

We have been running a pilot program of teachers using iPads for conferring and assessing. Every grade 2-5 teacher has an iPad and we have ongoing PD to help them use them when working with students. Some teachers use them strictly for conferring and assessing, other teachers have begun to use some educational games with small groups of students.


We also just got a 20 iPad cart which we are about to roll out to our 2 Science teachers for classroom use, a class set pilot program of sorts.


At the end of the year we are going to evaluate how the pilot programs have gone. At this point, assuming no major issues with the mobile cart, we are planning a set of 20 for each grade to share and possibly an iPad for every teacher.

We have begun purchasing for our special education teachers to pilot.  Later this month I will be piloting using the iPads in my classroom to work out bugs and to help develop an implimitation plan for our district.
I am an admin at Florence HS in Florence, AL. I will say this, students will still need their mobile carts along with the ipads. Whatever you do, dont give those netbooks and laptops away.
Indeed!  I teach Computer Science, so a tablet of any kind isn't a good solution for me, but for many subjects, it will be a great tool.
