I have heard similar thoughts from many other earlier/prior and present teachers. In our top-down system of education, teachers are often as constrained as students. I can confirm exactly you are stating here about increased structure correlating with increased levels of stress, depression, and anxiety in students.  Children are moved along a conveyor belt (from class to class and grade to grade) and teachers add widgets (bits of learning) to them. I had once thought that becoming a teacher was all I wanted, and then I looked long and hard regarding the teachers I had in high school and college and knew. I wanted to be for the specific reason of compact/confined learning. Kids and any other of the future generations go to school, it will be to understand that learning can be fun and fun can be beneficial.
