I have heard similar thoughts from many other earlier/prior and present teachers. In our top-down system of education, teachers are often as constrained as students. I can confirm exactly you are stating here about increased structure correlating with increased levels of stress, depression, and anxiety in students.  Children are moved along a conveyor belt (from class to class and grade to grade) and teachers add widgets (bits of learning) to them. I had once thought that becoming a teacher was all I wanted, and then I looked long and hard regarding the teachers I had in high school and college and knew. Kids and any other of the future generations go to school, it will be to understand that learning can be fun and fun can be beneficial.
