Leveraging the Potential of Personal Learning Networks for Teacher Professional Development - Doctoral Research Study

Dear Fellow Educators:    

My name is Katherine Maloney and I am a doctoral student at the University of Phoenix.  My dissertation focuses on how educators are using their Personal Learning Networks (PLNs) for professional development purposes.  I need your help.  

Please click on this link if you are able to spare 5 minutes or less of your time to complete a short survey containing 13 questions concerning your use of a PLN for professional development purposes.  The survey should no longer than 5 minutes to complete and your responses will be confidential.  At the end of the survey you will be asked whether you are willing to participate in the second phase of the study, which consists of Skype interviews with active and engaged PLN-users.  Please provide me with your email address if you are willing to be interviewed.

Good work! I just completed your survey. I also recruited fellow educators on different professional networks. I think this is a good topic and I will be happy to participate. I clicked yes that I will be interviewed. I don't know how your lick has been in getting participants from different PLNs, my was not very good. Hope you have a better luck getting participants.

In a time of exponential change, affordable and high-quality professional development for teachers is an urgent need that the Private Learning Network (PLN) promises to fulfill. The purpose of this qualitative case is to (a) examine, understand, and describe how teachers in PreK-12, who are members of the PLN community and Class 2.0 Educators, use their PLN for professional development; and (b) describe which components of PLN educators are critical to their success and ultimately to student success. To achieve this goal, an integrated case study set of two cases was used, including 10 active PreK-12 teachers and a dedicated PLN user downloaded from two different PLN sites. Data collection includes quantitative research, semi-structured interviews, voice exercises and documentary data. The results showed that participants used a variety of digital tools to create a personalized learning environment where they could make meaningful connections to a large network of others while gathering and sharing resources, participating in discussions, collaborating, implementing new training, giving and receiving support. and promote their careers. Study participants view institutional support as an important factor in the successful use of PLN for professional development purposes.
