The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

We are working in a Social Studies Project, and we are trying to know more about traditions, it would be great to start working with a Project for each month.  This month our topic is Halloween and Dia de Muertos, but we can learn more about different cultures. Can you share with us your real life experiences in our blogs?

We are working this way... and I hope this PLN helps you to work with your students too.

I am attaching our URL blog for 5th graders, but we can also work from K-7. Hope you are interested!!!!

I hope your students are enjoying learning about Dia de Muertos. My sixth graders loved learning about the ofrendas and the reason behind this celebration. We even went so far as to decorate our own sugar skulls. I think next year we, the teachers, will have to have a sugar skull making party, and allow the students to decorate them the the next day. It was a messy experience, but fun for them.

I am not sure where you are located, but we have a store here in Houston, Casa Ramirez, that offers classes every Saturday in the month of October to educate people about Dia de Muertos. Mr. Ramirez encourages all ethnicities to construct an ofrenda for those relatives in which they would like to celebrate. We have a parade in the Heights that sheds some light on the celebration. The biggest challenge is to allow family members access to the cemetery during the evening hours. Many cemeteries have a closing hour.
