The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

Our math team is designing a STEM Course for 12th. grade students.  We are interested in doing a STEM Research course, through which students will learn how to conduct an investigation using scientific method, descriptive and inferential statistics, etc. to answer an original research question.  Any ideas for resources? People to talk to?  Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi Ron,

Don't know if this will help, but I teach an independent research course in science called Special Aspects.  I have a Moodle site for it that you can log into as a guest.  Go to this site:

http://gahannamoodle.org/login/index.php

Then login as a guest.  The special enrollment key is "academysa" (don't include the quotes).  It should let you in and you are welcome to browse the files.  Be sure to look at the "Start Here" documents first to get an overall view of what we are trying to do... it may not fit exactly, but from the sounds of your description, I think it might be close.  My students tend to be juniors and seniors in engineering/robotics or biology/medicine, but it can work with any kids.

Feel free to drop me a line, set up a chat, etc.  My email I check most often is:

fdonelson@gmail.com

Hope this helps.  I love teaching this!

Fred

Thanks, Fred.  I just looked at the two Start Here documents, and this would definitely be useful to us!  Thank you for sharing.  Over the next few weeks, I will continue to look over these, and ask any questions I have.  As I compile information on our school's web-site, I will also share them with you.

I have been reading Tony Wagner's "Creating Innovators" as inspiration for this course.  You may want to check it out!

Ron
