How do schools educate parents as to the benefits and risks of Web 2.0 Tools/Social Media in schools?

Pulling this from the previous week's #edchat discussion.

How should we go about this in our school? Instead of a simple Open House/Meet the Teacher, could we take that opportunity to host a set of sessions that tell about our school/their student's day/intro the tools they'll be using/do a session on benefits and risks of web 2.0/social media?

I guess what I'm picturing is a series of sessions, almost like a conference, where parents would have to stamp each session they attended.

As far as what the message should be- I would think in our case it would be pretty simple to outline the benefits of utilizing social media. After all, their kids wouldn't be coming to this school if not for social media, right? The school wouldn't exist!

Finally- one last thing that I think needs to be a main focus is how students can build/mold their digital footprint by being active collaborators and publishers. That should definitely be a big tenet, here!

Immediately make the parents a part of the process by having them use some of the Web 2.0 tools. Each session should definitely be captured and shown. Once you get some parents directly involved it will be become contagious. I would suggest starting with the leadership of the school PTO and build from there.

You can use some of the sites on my Web 2.0 page http://cybraryman.com/web2.0.html to explain Web 2.0 and take it from there.

Excellent resource and I like your idea of starting with a core group and spreading from there.
