The personal learning network for educators

As a new assistant principal of a 8-12 hs, I'm looking for best practices. Can someone point me towards some PD?

Thanks Andrew for sharing these resources. The best practices in terms of discipline need to be fostered in children mind as it is these norms which shapes their character in long run. Although anything new is always fought with disagreement. But for the change to occur something has to be done today.

Ha this is just stuff I found on this site!   I will upload some of my own links later!

Dorothy, you are so right!   Consistency is SO important!

We've started a program in our academy for all new students to take our course on classroom discipline and learning incentives before they go on to any other type of course!

There's another article on here about discipline that alludes to the fact that discipline is not the same as punishment;  http://edupln.ning.com/xn/detail/4241570:BlogPost:94775

In that spirit I want to go a bit deeper with our conversation by asking everyone these questions;

What does your class ( or school ) discipline system look like?   What age groups is it currently being applied on?

How can we best share this with other teachers? ( especially the ones who are not really conscious of the need! )

I've got to get back to work but I will be back in the next few days or weeks to post some links to more discussions on discipline and see if we can bridge them for the greater good! ;)

Suzanne, you may want to read "Power Struggles" by Allen Mendler. It's a quick read and gives some theoretical reasons for why students misbehave as well as some strategies that teachers (and administrators) can use. It's focused more on managing the severely behaviorally challenged students, but it may assist you as an A.P.  in dealing with difficult students.

Alcohol dependence

Alcohol dependence has become an epidemic in the 21st century. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2.45 % of men and 5.78% of women consume alcohol daily.
