Yes, it certainly is!!! Children are amazing, I think that it is easier for them to learn brain based strategies, than teachers.

Fantastic! Isn't that so exciting and rewarding?

Hi Diane,
That is what I am doing! I teach them to realize what are they thinking while reading. We are working developing some strategies to make them do it. And they are improving even in other areas.

Mayus,
I also wanted to mention a couple of other things. When you can do something to really grab student attention, more neurons fire in the brain. The brain is constantly deciding what to keep and what to delete from working memory. To increase the likelihood of retention, create emotional connections to information. That would be the 'why is this important to me' information. Emotional connections are key. Hope this helps. :)

Hi Mayus,
The most important first step is to teach students metacognition... to think about their thinking. I've been blogging about what I'm learning in my BrainSMART Masters degree program at http://www.fortheloveofteaching.net. I've got an article there about a lesson I did on metacognition as well as other strategies I'm using. Once students begin to think about their thinking, you can begin teaching them - and their parents - thinking strategies.

Hi Joan,
Welcome to the group. I checked out the link, I'm going to spend more time going through it. It looks wonderful, thank you for sharing it! I'm getting my Masters degree in brain based teaching right now. It is so fascinating, I just can't get enough of it.

Oops I tried to add a link but it didn't work. You can google Dr. Judy Willis to find her site. http://www.radteach.com/

Whatever Would We Do Without the 'Black Hats'?

I was introduced to the 'Six Thinking Hats' as an Assistant Principal with PSD.  A group of administrators had been reading the book and shared their learning through a really fun bag of hats - each hat in the bag a different color.  Each hat represented collaboration in the task of looking at an existing landscape or an initiative from different perspectives.  I was particularly intrigued by the black hat.As an administrator, the black hat can be the most challenging to work with - especially…See More
