"Confronting Ableism"

Anyone out there read this article?  The ideal educational setting would use the strengths of Learners with challenges to teach to and adapt programs for those Learners rather than trying to "fix the problem"...A very thought provoking article.

Hello all,

My name is Dan Gillmor and I am a SH humanities teacher in northern Alberta. I am currently working on developing meaningful ways to engage my students using 21st C. practices. I look forward to conversations that take place along these lines as well as any others regarding the practice of education in Canada.

Hello Fellow Educators.  I'm a Learning Assistance Teacher in Delta.  I'm excited about collaborating with Teachers in my school and working hard to try and make School Based Team meetings a valuable use of time. UDL, simple action plans where everyone has a role in support and follow-up discussions seems to be working so far.  I'd love to hear about other schools' SBT meetings, how they work for you, ideas/activities that you value or anything else to do with support systems in your schools. :D

Hi Nancy, I'm completing the SFU TLTC Coquitlam!  Happy inquiring!

I'll look through my Diigo kellyjensen and find some resources.  But my fav is simply Etherpad.  Great opportunities for AFL practice.

Best of luck.

There are so many outstanding, free Web2.0 applications that are perfect for writing exercises in primary grades.  Some of the best I've seen are: kidblog.orgstoryjumper.comstorybird.com/teachers/zooburst.com/

myfakewall.com/xtranormal.com/edu.glogster.com/

and audacity.sourceforge.net/ (great free audio editor for podcasts)

I'm a gr.4/5 teacher working in Maple Ridge, BC.  I'm in the Teaching and Learning in Today's Classroom module in Maple Ridge.  My field study this term will be looking at how I can use technology to meet my learning goals for writing.  I'd love to hear about how others have used technology in Writer's Workshop!

The past 2 comments have touched many issues being explored in my classroom and school.  I am currently learning about the New Literacies (Pahl & Roswel) and How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School: Expanded Edition (2000).  I teach in Squamish BC and am currently enrolled @ SFU Intergating technology COHORT.  I look forward to furture discussiona d sharing of resources.

Hope you all have a great start to your school year!

Daycare or Preschool: Which Is Better for Your Child

If you are trying to decide which one you should choose for your child, first look at your child's abilities. Would they be better suited for a preschool environment where they can explore and learn, or would they do better in a less structured environment like a daycare? Visit a few of each and see just what kind of activities they include. This may be the one best way to determine which one is right for your child.Read more here:…See More

Use these two words and become a better student

Words are powerful. And you do not only know that since your last exam. A single word can change everything: it can make you the victor, save relationships, calm you down or pull you into the abyss.Finding the right words is an art that not everyone masters. Some use their words inflationary and put one empty phrase to the next. Others put every word on the gold scale and interpret everything possible into what is said. But your choice of words not only affects how other people perceive you. Your…See More

Online Education: Can It Really Replace Learning in Classrooms?

In the modern world education is a part of everyone's life. Even if someone did not graduate from college or finish school, they still learn new skills or just something they are interested in. That can likewise be called education, or, even a more appropriate term is self-education. This concept is closely related to…See More
