The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I'm a Math 8 teacher doing a unit on Algebra. I use technology in my instruction (teach with touch-screen tablet computer + digital projector, have a class website with videos, games and resources, blog, etc) but want to find more student-centered activities utilizing technology to promote understanding and engagement in mathematics.

Does anyone have any ideas or want to collaborate on a technogy-rich Algebra unit?

Thanks :)

I came across a blog yesterday that might give you some inspiration. Vi Hart is a mathematician who is fascinated by the connections between math and music or math and art. She makes videos about the results. This page is about math doodling and you can link to other subjects via the sidebar.
Thanks for that link Susan! That's a really cool blog -- definitely makes some connections between math learned in classrooms and real-life applications/patterns.

I love Algebra. Here's a link to my blog posts on this, some more directly related than others.  I just realised there are quite a few but please have a quick browse. I found that showing an unusual use of Algebra (patterns, really) helped students appreciate it more.

cheers.

I tried using GET THE MATH (http://www.thirteen.org/get-the-math/) with my 13-15 year old students with equations and inequalities.

It was a great opener to my unit, because I could then see which students were comfortable with problem solving with equations and inequalities, and which students I would go back with and find out ways to solve equations with that worked in their brains!

I'm an LEP Instructor and I really don't have the extra time to teach math in my classroom. However, during my district's first ever Summer ESL Newcomer Program, we want the kids to practice math along with their literacy skills. I have found that there are great sites (like IXL.com) for my students to practice the skills in math that they struggle most with. If you are able to purchase a teacher and/or site license, then you can set up your classes. This will enable you monitor the students' log on activity to see that they are working at home, and you will also receive weekly reports of what areas that your students are mastering and/or struggling with. I really enjoy these types of online practice sites. Are any of you familiar with more sites like this? If so, please share.

Is Online Learning The Answer For The Coronavirus Closed Schools?

With the rapid spread of the Corona Virus, there has been a clarion call for schools to close and immediately shift to online learning in the interest of health and safety. With all that has been written and talked about in regard to “online learning” over the last decade, the perception is that now is a great time to put tech to work and implement this modern methodology to address our current situation and limit face-to-face exposure in order to self-quarantine a huge portion of our…See More
