One of the reasons behind forming this was group was to address some of the issues that are unique to Judaic studies teachers. Just as a way to get the discussion started I am going to list some of the issues that I am currently dealing with and my hope is that this will spark future discussions.
1. Establishing Benchmarks and Standards for the Judaic studies curriculum
2. Incorporating 21st Century Skills and Technology within the Judaic Studies curriculum
3. What do we want a graduate from a Jewish Day School to look like
4 Ivrit B'Ivrit
5. Making Tefilah more meaningful

Hi Everyone!

I'm happy to see our group has grown a bit, and I have a question about how we think we can expand it further. I have found the Edu PLN to be an incredible professional resource (though I still don't use it to its full capacity) -- and I would love to see more Jewish educators using the resource, as it is even more pertinent for them than it is for me as a Jewish education professional. How do we get the word out?

It has been a while and I need to be be updating and posting more on this group site. 

I think this site could be helpful to many educators as a way to share ideas and collaborate. However that can only work if we all share and post different things. 

I posted some ideas about DI and Tal Am and would love to get your feedback. 

One of the latest topics discussed  on Twitter lately has been about passion vs data and I think this is very important in a Jewish Day School when we want to instill a love of learning and a passion for Yiddishkiet. Here to I think it is a worthy discussion to have  how we balance both

Thank you for your comment. I do agree that feedback is necessary and when you assess student work students do appreciate the feedback and gain more from the feedback than the grade itself. . My post was referring to report grades and even when we do give comments more often that not the students and the parents focus on the grade. As I said what does A+ on the report card mean does that mean that you finished learning for the year.
What was missing from my post which I tweeted afterwards was that for this to work these needs to be clear benchmarks and standards that the students are meeting

This week I saw someone tweet that students appreciate a comment more than a grade. I was going to retweet it but unfortunately I didn't. In my experience using an CMS, I find that students look forward to a personal comment. A grade is a label, a comment is a personal meaningful connection. They appreciate the feedback both positive or negative (e.g. This needs to be polished because it seems to me you are unclear about xyz...etc). The student is no longer reduced to a number. Don't get me wrong, the students want to see how I graded their work as well, but it is in the broader context of personal feedback. They want to know what do I think of their work? What was good about it? What needs to be improved? What do I think of them personally? Have I noticed their effort? The comment does not have to be long, but it needs to be individualized to the students work (not just a generic "Good job!" type of comment) and the quicker the better. With technology nowadays, this is very easy to do. Much more meaningful than a just a number. As a said, the kids look forwards to logging on to the CMS, to see my comments and I believe it makes them work harder from the start.

I think the picture is good and I wonder if you used it to emphasize the absence of "new" technologies and our focus on the importance of our texts.
