GET THE MATH? Three online tutorials my eighth and ninth graders tried out & reflected on in collaborative groups...

My eighth graders were done with practice and problems from the text.  We had ran races to then calculate unit rates for our speed in meters per second to compare ourselves to Usain Bolt.  Some students were still not hooked by the concept of unit rate...and a member of my twitter PLN posted a link to GET MATH, where my students successfully timed out some hooks to beats by using unit rates in a masure of music. 

 

My ninth graders have been solving algebraic equations by balancing, and some have been solving by using the properties of inverse operations (the story of x). 

I had them try out the GET MATH fashion challenge and they were learning about the intricacies of equalities and inequalities and how they change the outcome of the price of a blouse/promdress/cargo shorts/jacket!

 

It was math in action, with engaging technology that laid everything out for the teacher that wants either a) all the answer keys and rigid details :-)  or b) to let their students have some flexibility in their learning and apply their conceptualizations of either unit rate (gr. 8) or algebra equations and inequalities (gr. 9) in an engaging fashion!

 

I really need to find the createors of the site and thank them for helping me realize that yes, technology is NOT just an ADD ON to teaching, but it is helping students apply their ideas and IS NOT taking time away from curricular learning...if anything, it is a refreshing break from the hum drum routines that sometimes separate school learning from learning to learn because they are engaged!
