The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

Anyone teaching S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders? I'm wanting to do some sort of kinesthetic activity that involves privileging some students and limiting others (maybe an obstacle course?) that drives home the idea that some get all of the breaks in life (the Socs) while others don't (the Greasers). Thoughts?

I just finished teaching The Outsiders. I cut out small squares of blue and green colored paper. When the students walked in I gave each student either a blue or a green. When we read independently in my room students get to sit or lay around my classroom. When all the students come into the room on this day I say that only the people with green pieces of paper get to sit around the room, the ones with blue have to stand for the class period. After about 20 minutes the students who are standing are very frustrated and then I ask them how this relates to the story. I have also done this activity in my Civil Rights unit.

Have you looked at Shmoop? I’m not sure about kinesthetic activities, but it really helped me when I taught The Outsiders  last year. It goes through the book chapter by chapter, has a ton of quotes with explanations, goes through the themes, as well all the literary devices. It has quizzes, questions and supplementary resources too for extra practice. The kids found it really useful because it was online, accessible and has a very young, fresh approach to literature.

Thanks for the tip on Shoomp. I just checked it out and found lots of great books I use to teach about the civil rights.
