The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I always like to start with positive thinking. Coming back to what I feel like students or groups do best helps gear them up to move forward.

What is something that you do well, despite being new to the profession?

What is a skill you gravitate towards, for example, like "answering off-the-wall questions calmly."

I have found I can accomplish a lot by using humor. I have been able to diffuse tense situations, engage students in something new, help them feel safe to take risks, and generally make my classroom a low-pressure environment. One student has been able to break out of her rigid routines because she can now accept the "unexpected" (like her teacher breaking out into song or cheering out loud when someone demonstrates outstanding learning).
I feel being able to manage behaviour is one of my strengths. I relief teach and have had some challenging classes with children with ADHD, ODD & ASD. I surprised myself with how well I managed them. My experience as a parent is undoubtedly of great value.
I discovered that, possibly because I didn't learn well via traditional instruction, I prefer to be as creative with my instruction as I can.  I like to get students up and moving and involved in class/learning experiences.  I also have had some success with classroom management, but I'm always trying to improve!

I'm new to this network, so please forgive me... I'd just like to jump into this conversation, as you all sound like wonderful 'new' teachers! I also think I'm pretty good at the humor thing, but I think my biggest strength being reasonably new to the profession is being creative and flexible. Having worked in China with limited resources, and as an occasional teacher it's a life saver at times!

I think reading groups is something I do well.  I am able to get my students reading and they enjoy reading independently or with a partner.  A coworker and myself started reading and implementing the Daily 5.  I love that the literacy center choices are student centered and there are ZERO copies to be made.  All of my students have been making reading level progress even my RTI students.  Reading daily is the only way to get students to be better readers.
