The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I am a high school art instructor in southeastern N.C.  A couple of weeks ago I took 23 of my students to view the Southeast Division of the Scholastic Art Exhibit at Barton College.  Having done this before I wanted to create more of an interactive experience for my students than just looking at the artwork and then going to lunch.  All the gold key winners were posted on Barton's websit.  So I looked at the 209 pieces and wrote 20 clues about 20 individual pieces of artwork.  I created the whole podcast in which included music, sound effects and my voice reading the clues.  My students uploaded the podcast to their MP3 players or Ipods which I knew they were going to take with them anyway. The student or team of students who got the most correct answers was to win a small monetary prize.  Once we got there they put in their ear phones and started listening to the podcast as they went from piece to piece.  A few of the clues were things such as: "This piece contains two complimentary colors and an article of clothing", "This piece contains collaged photographs, text and paint", and "Some may say this drawing is unfinished but I like to think it uses the art principle of emphasis instead."  On thier answer sheets they wrote down the name of the artist who did the piece that they thought I was describing.  It was a huge success.  They were actively looking at the pieces for clues involving art vocabulary that we talk about all the time in class.  This time they weren't so anxious to go to lunch.  In fact, I had to warn them about leaving several times because some of them weren't finished with all 20 clues.  I will definitely try this again and hope to come up with others ways of incorporating podcasts into my curriculum.  If the attachment doesn't work just send me an email and I'll send it to you.
