I have been wondering if it would be beneficial for me to create short podcasts of some of our math lessons in order for parents to see what I am trying to get their children to understand.  An example would be when we are working on double digit addition/subtraction (I teach first) I have the students use tens and ones manipulatives to discover the answer.  The manipulatives change depending on where the student is conceptually.  Some students will be using the bean sticks we made, some will be using place value discs, and some are ready for the "procedure" of adding/subtracting double digit numbers.

 

I was thinking that short video podcasts would help me reach more parents and help them see how we are working through learning the concepts before we move to the procedure of certain concepts. 

 

Are there any elementary teachers using podcasts in this manner?

I'm not an elementary teacher (I teach English as a foreign language) but have worked with elementary school-aged learners. I think it's a very good idea; I've actually been thinking about making podcasts (audio only) for more advanced students to help them develop their writing skills.

I think anything that you can do to involve parents in the work you do in the classroom will be positive. Especially with 6-9 year-olds, in my experience, parents are very curious as to what goes on in the classroom. The podcasts (vodcasts?) would also help parents to help their children if they're doing their homework and they get stuck. They can even watch your videos together and analyse where/why they're stuck.

A vodcast is a great idea. You may want to check out Youtube.com and Vimeo. They are great social media sites to give you some guidance on what others are doing. Note how many people have viewed it. That sometimes can give you an idea of the acceptance of the vodcast. Will you make it private? If you are using your class, you will have to get permission forms from the children and parents. This is true for private vodcasts and public ones. If you will not use your class in the vodcast, then think out the script that you are using. Your vodcast is a television show of sorts and it can be recorded by anyone. Remember that your students can record the vodcasts even if it is in Private mode :=)
