Literacy strategy sharing - Freyer Model - Fishing for Light & Optics online resources too!

Hey everyone! I am just exploring using the Freyer model to help introduce my grade8 science students to light & optics (luminous, non-luminous, chemiluminescent, flourescent, incandescent, etc.).  The Freyer model is a literacy strategy used to help frame the investigation of a concept for a student.  They flesh out what are examples and non examples of something as well as what defines the concept and what is a characteristic (but not always essential) to a concept.

Of course, hands-on physics for middle years students is easy for this set of concepts, so we will be using examples and realia in the classroom as well as searching out copious graphics of illustrative examples!  If anyone has interesting links that students could use (Flickr streams, websites, etc.) to find examples of the above topics I mentioned, please comment!

Check out this Ontario, Canada model of how to apply the Freyer model in a middle school to senior high setting.  http://oame.on.ca/main/files/thinklit/FrayerModel.pdf

Hope to hear from some fellow science teachers and let's start sharing ideas and links in this group.  So glad you find you all.

There are some great optics simulations available here.  Or you can choose from the age-sorted Middle School sims.  These are from the University of Colorado, they are easy for students to use.  I've used them quite a lot in high school physics.

You can design a lesson including a demo and some follow-up questions based on changing the settings.

Top 10 Digital Platforms that Turn Teachers into Mentors

The current generations of educators have a huge burden on their shoulders. They are the carriers of change. They have to encourage project-based learning, greater collaboration between the students, insightful discussions… the list goes on and on.Out of all trends in education, this is the most important one: teachers are being transformed into mentors. Since the role of the educator is changed, everything else changes, too: the teaching methods, the testing and grading, the way we pay…See More
