Who controls your 1 to 1 lessons?

Started by Olaf Elch Dec 30, 2009. 0 Replies

One of the most noticeable things about my 1 to 1's is the differences in style and content. When I do group teaching I use, for want of a better phrase, my "house style". But when it comes to 1 to 1…Continue

What English language books do you recommend to your students?

I teach a lot of business people, so I often suggest that they read books like, "The Tipping Point" or "Made to Stick." I think biz books are good for all learners because they usually have one or…Continue

Are you a self-employed teacher?

Who do you teach? What do you teach? Do you travel to your students, or do they travel to you? Do you work at a school part time?

How long are your 1-on-1 lessons?

Started by Blythe Musteric. Last reply by Chris Cotter Nov 17, 2009. 2 Replies

My sessions are usually 1.5 hours, but sometimes I meet with people two or three times a week for 1 hour. I'll occasionally meet Ss for 2 hours, but that's about my limit.

Hello Blythe and Hi Anne,

Nearly all of my students are one to one students, I think mainly because it works for me at this moment in life. I have a young family (with a three year old son) and this way of self-employed teaching has it's huge benefits time and flexibility-wise. As you know, it does come with it's disadvantages to like the intense preparation for one student and a sort of relentlessness that can set in if you take your eye off the ball. But actually I love it! To focus on one student's needs and development really is a luxury I'm always reminding myself of.

I shall answer the other questions on the comments:) Looking forward to collaborating and sharing with you (and many more I am sure)

Emma
