I am looking for a third grade class with whom my students could be pen pals . We could skype, ichat, or write letters. Any takers?

Dash notes are from the Harvey Goudvis Comprehension Toolkit.  They have a section under the synthesis section for the lessons I use.  Dash notes have a two column heading, notes and my thinking.  We work on thinking about the information and writing in in our own words.  We talk about how we have in the past copied the information straight from the text and not thought about it or really learned anything.  I hope this helps.

I also teach Third Grade and would love to collaborate on ideas.  My partner teacher introduced me to the Wax Museum.  We do this with our biography book report and invite parents and students to walk through.  It is one of the highlights of our year.  We'll be doing it in March and I'll be sure to share some photos.

We are making a reading fluency portfolio right now.  Students practice reading a book for fluency (not comprehension) and ultimately will record it into Garageband.  Here is a link to learn more about it.

I also have been having my kids blog as a way to write.  Students have to write their post in their journal before I approve it for publishing on the web.  Feel free to visit their posts and make a comment!

Spelling City is a great place for kids to play games with their spelling words.  My partner teacher and I even let our kids pick half their spelling words based on words they commonly misspell in their writing.  Here is a link to the links page on my website.

We are leaving our character study and moving onto biographies with an emphasis on inventors. We are working on determining what is important and learning to take "dash notes".  We will complete an file folder on our inventor with an important poem, essay and a timline.  Then we will have a wax museum in Feb where the children dress as their inventor with a push here button.  The students stand and speak as if they are the inventor.  I  teach language arts to 2 third grade classes.  My partner teaches the math science, ss and math although I try to incorporate what they are learning in their content areas

How can I turn down Third Grade! My wife taught 3rd grade and my eldest granddaughter just completed it. I have a lot of helpful sites for Third Grade on the Primary Education page on my website (Cybrary Man's Educational Web Sites)

I finally understand what Parent Teacher Conferences are all about

I have parents coming into my classroom today asking how their child is doing in my class. They only have a 95, how can they get a higher grade?Really? This happens over and over again. I wonder why they're here. I don't think it's to make themselves feel better about how great their child is doing in school. I also don't think that they are very worried about the 95 not being a 98. I believe it's to show their child that they are fully invested in their education.Parents who show up to Parent…See More
