Death of a New Year's Resolution

I pulled up the note on my iPod the other day, the one that I wrote last December to chart all my New Year's Resolutions.  I'm doing pretty well.  I've been financially responsible.  I'm 6 lbs from my Jan 1 '11 goal weight. I've sent birthday cards and gift cards to every family member so far this year. But then there's the one about the reading...I was supposed to read 4 professional books. I haven't read one.  And here it is September. So please help me find some sense of accomplishment in my…See More

Looking forward to a conference

Hey fellow language teachers--our state language teachers association conference is this coming weekend and @jannachiang and I are doing a 3-hour workshop on the PLN.  I'm going to be showing attendees the eduPLN here.  Would you give them a shout-out and suggest one tool, tech or otherwise, to use for either writing or speaking assessment, and mention which part of this NING is helpful to you? Thanks!See More

Quick question- paperless: environment or education?

I've been wanting to really go paperless for a while but I and my students and my school just don't have the technology for it.  One of my summer projects is to apply for a grant to take my class paperless next year with an interactive whiteboard and ipads.  My first application is the Pepsi refresh project at the $5k level (I teach part-time, advanced electives, so I only have about 20 students so that's enough).  They ask you to choose environment or education.  The proposal is both.  Which…See More

Hi Sara! Yes, great point. And we are all new at these huge changes but the point is to take risks and experiment new options, new ways to do the things we were doing as granted, new technologies. But how??? Trying, doing, commiting mistakes and learning with them.

How to learn common core math standards?

This is the most common question, I observed the students usually have. We all know how to learn math, but what has to be done for learning math according to the common core standards. It’s quite organized once you follow it. Common core standards have…See More

How Do We Stop Illiterate Educators?

We are now better than fifteen years into the 21st Century and educators are still discussing what role technology plays in education. The fact of the matter is no matter what educators, who are mostly products of a 20th Century education, think, our students today will need to be digitally literate in their world in order to survive and thrive. Digital Literacy is a 21st Century skill, but therein lies the rub. Most of our educators have been educated with a twentieth Century mindset using…See More
