Do you teach your students "How to Learn?" and if so, how do you teach this skill?

I find many of my post-secondary students missing the what to do, how to do it, and why do it (perhaps that way) regarding how to learn effectively and efficiently. I find this true across groups,…Continue

About Digin4ed

I have a broad background in business and financial analysis, economics, information technology and education. A couple years ago, I changed my focus to serving as an educator in higher education. I believe post secondary education (particularly at community colleges) plays an increasingly critical role in the economic vitality of our community and nation, as well as the quality of life for those in our area. This area faces an increasingly complex set of simultaneous challenges in this time of globalization, economic stress and societal transformation fueled by information technology. I look forward to being part of meeting this challenge as an educator, employee, colleague, collaborator, messenger, or in whatever other forms that may arise.

I teach Economics and Finance on-ground at Monroe Community College and online at Colorado Technical University. I have also taught at Nazareth College and Ashford University.

I have been active in the Social Media Club's Education Connection since it kicked off in 2009. The project continued to grow and in 2010 I became one of the initial members of their Board of Advisers. As we set off on the mission of the group, it became apparent the the need had grown for a significantly broader program. In June of 2011, I became the Interim Executive Director and Chair of the BOA for SMCEDU. We are now in the process of building our infrastructure, putting together initiatives, and working toward the 501(c)(3) designation for our new organization:

The Social Media Global Education Connection Project (SMGECP).

The SMGECP mission is “To provide leadership, guidance, facilitation and resources to students, educators, and administrators in educational organizations that will promote and enable competent usage of social media by the world’s citizens, workforces, educational institutions, and societies."  Our focus is directed around Higher Education Organizations.

Our chats are on Wednesdays at 12 Noon ET and 9PM ET. Join us via the hashtag #SMEDU.

This project grew out of, and is sponsored by the Social Media Club, Inc: the non-profit global trade association of social media professionals which was founded in 2006. SMC has 300 + chapters and 300,000 + members.

Note: I passed off my role as Lead Manger of the Higher Education Teaching and Learning (HETL) Group on LinkedIn in February of 2011. I still remain on the Board of Advisers.

I am a very open net worker with other educators, regardless of what level or subject they teach, where they teach or what their experience level is.

There is more about me on my MCC faculty site and my profile on Linkedin. You can also find me on G+ at http://gplus.to/Digin4ed.

“Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” Victor Hugo

Such has been the case with social media. In less than a decade, social media has come to impact the planet’s population, businesses, groups and governments: how we work, learn, lead and live. It is not surprising that the industry’s trade association, The Social Media Club (SMC), has grown to over 200 chapters and 300,000 members in the past five years. Nor is it surprising that relationships between the…

The activities exposed by Chronicle of Higher Education in the article “The Shadow Scholar” and the revelation of widespread cheating at the University of Central Florida are manifestations of values gone awry in our society. These are the values we have embraced and passed on. We talk about how important education is to society, our kids and ourselves. Yet our real beliefs are displayed by our actions, which are… Continue

The advent of the automobile brought dramatic advances in our capabilities around travel and mobility. Over time, the affordability, reliability, capabilities and infrastructure would develop such that its use spread from a select group of adventurous pioneers to the everyday lives of average individuals, including young adults. Over time, rules, regulations, laws, etiquette, licenses, mandatory training and government oversight bodies would develop to improve…

An invitation to my Educator's PLN colleagues to also join me in the Higher Education Teaching and Learning group on LinkedIn

A couple months ago Patrick Blessinger created this new group. The mission is to create a global community of educators (administrators/managers, faculty/researchers, students/learners) who have an interest/expertise in the art/science of higher education teaching and learning. Members represent most countries, disciplines, functions, and levels to create a global perspective on teaching and learning, i.e., the multifaceted teaching-learning process that…

Integration with The Latest Technology in Education Field

It is with certainty that we can say that the future of education is looking very bright. Today the kids are taught so many new innovations that we adults couldn't have imagined learning at school. They are also given exposure to more practical lessons. Integration with the latest technology and the accessibility to global platforms have made the industry take a whole new perspective towards imparting knowledge to students. Though the current generation is much advanced and keep up with the…See More
