Reflection is not just for mirrors anymore.

Where were you last year? Where are you now? Where do you want to be in a year?

Three questions that can stop you in your tracks.

In September, I present to the students my goals for the year. I look at them periodically throughout the year to see if I'm on track. More times than not, I'm nowhere near them. The rosy glow of September is deceiving; so my original plans don't take into consideration the set backs along the way. While it's a humbling…

Thinking differently about school leadership

Pilates for the mind. I’d never thought of what I do as some kind of mind stretching exercise until my hairdresser called it that as she snipped away at my hair the other day.

I’d been paying my usual six weekly visit to get my haircut and we were discussing my latest trip to Brunei, where I work with the School Principals there. I described what I did, and how the programme evolved over the week, and how I challenge the participants to think in different ways, different directions.…

Resilience - nature or nurture?

Resilience is a buzz word which has been used (and abused) for years. Football teams have been described as being resilient. The same word has been used for refugees. Hardly the same word really.

One thing about the word fascinates me though. Can it be taught or is it inherent?

The recent and not so recent research below seems to suggest that it is probably both. Some people just seem to be more resilient to the knocks that life brings and have…

4 Apps that helped me lose 40 pounds.

On the one year anniversary of joining the gym, I wanted to celebrate my accomplishment and take a look back at the journey so far. I realize my phone has been the most important tool to my success.

Full disclosure: it wasn't just the apps that helped me lose weight, there was some sweat involved. (Actually lots of sweat. There's no pill to make this happen; if there was Oprah would have invented it. She had to lose weight the hard way and so do…

Catch up or recovery?

I've been intrigued by the language of "catch up" which has come from government ministers and even the Children's Commissioner. The idea that lockdown has resulted in lost learning and a widening of the gap can't be disputed but it is the solutions put forward by government which has revealed the reductive nature of the government's attitude to learning and to young people. To reduce education and learning to an accumulation of facts devoid from any contextual influence is just simply naive.…See More
