BECTA's loss is not just a technological one.

I understand that the Government has inherited a huge budget deficit and that savings have to be made but I really feel that the unfair elimination of BECTA will have a huge impact upon the life chances of our children and their ability to support and develop the economy of this country in what will be a very competitive and technology dependent future.

At a time when schools were beginning to question the Victorian premis on which they were originally built, ie get as many…

This is the environment that…

Bring on the learning revolution!

Great speech by Ken Robinson at TED Feb 10

He talks about starting anew and challenging the existing understanding and prevailing understanding about education and although this isn't comfortable, that we should disenthrall ourselves.

"The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew and act anew. We must disenthrall…

Higher Education and educational policies are under scrutiny ...

I am writing a conference paper and would like to harvest the collective mind of the social web for some constructive comments - this is just a small portion of one page. Don´t want to exceed the 10000 word policy :)

Higher Education and educational policies are under scrutiny as we move forward into the 21st century. The traditional higher educational system, with it universities as the hub of knowledge, is under revision, less from the universities them self’s but more from a… Continue

Forcing a Flower to Bloom

Data.

Now there's a loaded word in education. What is data? Well, I think data is a tool (one of many) that can be used to assess where a student is in relation to his/her academic growth. It can be read well and tell a lot about a student, but it can also be misinterpreted. Data often gives educators and administrators a good place to start in assessing what a child needs.

But it can't end there (in my opinion). Isn't teacher…

Trying a new approach to presentations

This will be a rather short post...

I have decided to get away from the traditional Power Point presentation that I have been inflicting on my students in Chemistry 1. I am going to give a visual approach a try through an application called mind42. Here's my first published mind map. I want to actually use this resource to assist my students in making connections between concepts as well as to turn their informal study into an active learning… Continue

Why Everyone In Education Needs a PLN

When I explain the concept behind the Professional Networked Learning Collaborative one of the biggest misconceptions I have to overcome is educators’ understanding of how a network is different than just searching the Internet. Some educators ask,…

An invitation to my Educator's PLN colleagues to also join me in the Higher Education Teaching and Learning group on LinkedIn

A couple months ago Patrick Blessinger created this new group. The mission is to create a global community of educators (administrators/managers, faculty/researchers, students/learners) who have an interest/expertise in the art/science of higher education teaching and learning. Members represent most countries, disciplines, functions, and levels to create a global perspective on teaching and learning, i.e., the multifaceted teaching-learning process that…

3 Best Educational Apps for Student

When we think of mobile phones in the classroom, it tends to be a forbidden subject as teachers found them as a distraction against education.
