Socratic Seminars Succeed With Tech Tools!

Over 2400 years ago Socrates figured out that:
  • Lectures are boring and should not be the sole means of imparting knowledge
  • Regardless of grade or ability level, all students can learn, and learn best when given the opportunity to express themselves, reflecting on what they already know, connecting what they know…

My First Week as a Principal

Life as an Educator:

Becoming a teacher has been a dream of mine since I was 10 years old.  I have been a Youth Coach & Camp Director, Physical Education teacher, Wellness Coordinator, Adjustment Counselor, Athletic Director, Head High School Football Coach, Assistant Principal and as of four weeks ago, the Principal of Normandin Middle School in…

Connecting with Kids

A major concern of mine moving out of the class room and into administration was the inability to positively connect with kids on a daily basis.  As a new Principal, my realization is that I now have the…

Launch day of our new online module for teacher education

Wednesday evening saw the BIG LAUNCH NIGHT of our online teacher education module. Over 60 students eagerly waited in the lecture theatre for the presentation of the module that would occupy their lives for the next seven weeks. The feedback was very positive; they found the navigation straightforward and were able to get to grips with the tasks easily. Many of their anxieties of participating in an online course were dissipated as soon as they had a play.

Before we gave the…

Does being connected help in being recognized?

This is a difficult subject to write about without being labeled smug, arrogant, conceited, or all three, but that is a risk I take. The Bammy Awards took place recently. If you never heard of The Bammy Awards for educators, there is good reason. They were invented this year. From the Bammy Awards site  we have this: “The Bammy Awards acknowledge that teachers can’t do it alone and don’t do it alone. The Awards aim to…

My Journey As a Teacher Leader...Baby steps!

I just read our Teacher's Working Condition Survey results from the 2011-2012 school year and found that 50% of our teachers feel that they need more training in the area of gifted education in order to meet the needs of gifted learners in the classroom. I consider this a large number considering we have 21 teachers in grades k-6. Since the budget crises and cuts to professional development, I feel that as the gifted teacher this now rests on my shoulders. I suppose an after school meeting…

#Why I Don't Use Technology: Anti-Tech Teachers Lament Has No Standing!

The conversation went something like this:

Teacher: Do you know he suggested using Tagxedo at Reading Night?

Me: What a wonderful idea!

Teacher: I don't see why they want to use technology. (said with disdain)

Me: Why not? The kids and parents would have a…

Media Literacy for Pre-schooler's

Faith Rogow does a great job in this post regarding Media literacy and Pre-Schoolers. A majority of media literacy strategies are geared towards middle school and high school students. The question she ask is....what are the strategies for pre-schoolers?

Any one who has worked with young children (3-5) or has a young child will relate. DO we just deprive these children of media because they aren't able to analyze?

Dr. Rogow is also the founder of the Alliance for a Media…

Technology Takes the Bite Out of Grammar!

One of my pet peeves about the teaching of grammar is hearing educators complain year after year that students can't spell, punctuate, distinguish a verb from a noun, write a sentence...

yada, yada, yada. Educators pass the blame from grade to grade, yet many students reach the 12th grade with below average grammar skills unable to write or speak coherently.    …

Integration with The Latest Technology in Education Field

It is with certainty that we can say that the future of education is looking very bright. Today the kids are taught so many new innovations that we adults couldn't have imagined learning at school. They are also given exposure to more practical lessons. Integration with the latest technology and the accessibility to global platforms have made the industry take a whole new perspective towards imparting knowledge to students. Though the current generation is much advanced and keep up with the…See More
