Ending techno-criticism in education?

What must schools look and be like in order to take advantage of laptop computers and other technology? Here's how my colleague Alan Bain and I are thinking about that question: "The End of Techno-Critique: The Naked Truth about 1:1 Laptop Initiatives and Educational Change" http://bit.ly/4F8B5Z

Technology Tools Used to Enhance Our Homeschooling

As the year comes to an end, I find myself, like many, reflecting on what worked and didn't work last semester. As I looked back through our projects, I was amazed at the progress made by our children. I want to share some of the ways we used technology to enhance the learning process. Even though some activities were not successful and we ran into the usual frustrations associated with technology, there were many exciting moments. Check out the full post at… Continue

Student Teaching and Learning Group

The Teaching and Learning Group

At Hawes Side we have worked for many years to develop student voice. One of the most important groups I meet with regularly is our T&L Group. This is made up of a group of children in Y6 (10 and 11 year olds). One day a week we have lunch together and share our thoughts on a range of topics that we feel will ultimately help us become better learners.

Our research recently has featured on the qualities of an effective learner. The first… Continue

A Journey in TEFL

LETTERS, THE TEACHER'S ELVES

I’m sure we sometimes finish the lesson before the planned time or we see that our students are lost and aren’t following us then we tend to find something to motivate them.

It’s always a good idea to have something ready for these moments. Fillers are great. They are short, energising and motivating.

Whenever I feel we are stuck in the middle of the lesson and have nothing to continue, I use one of the simplest tools that I have,… Continue

Ubuntu Educators Community

The world at times is a do-ocracy. Tonight I decided to create a Ning community for Ubuntu Educators. I wanted to create this community to give educators and those supporting educators a place to:

* Share ideas about how to use FOSS in the classroom

* Share success stories

* Ask questions on how to develop curriculum using FOSS

In short have a resource that discusses pedagogy. While there is a great amount of information pertaining to the more technical side of… Continue

QUIET TUBE ROCKS!

I've always hated pulling up YouTube videos due to the comments, related videos, and other junk that are crawling all over the pages for individual videos. Well I have just found the cure from (@cliotech aka Jennifer Dorman on Twitter).

The cure is QUIET TUBE. All you need to do is drag the Quiet Tube button into your bookmark toolbar and when you find a video on YouTube or other related site you just need to click the Quiet Tube button and the video plays alone in a separate window...no… Continue

Dissertation buy or not to buy-that is the question?

The pressure of writing a dissertation is most monstrous and unimaginable. Due to inability to handle the ginormous task on their own and deadly threatening time constraint, many people decide to buy a dissertation.

It is neither an easy task to decide where to buy dissertation from nor ask for an advice on it. Judgmental as advisors may be, they regard buying dissertation online unethical which is… Continue

Edchat Wordle from 12/1/09

I have yet to have the chance to participate in an Edchat discussion on Twitter, however I have spent some time looking over a few of the transcripts. I think this is a great tool/forum and look forward to participating in the near future. After looking over the transcript this evening, I decided to copy the text and create a Wordle (subtracting date, time, usernames, and other things like "RT", "@", and "#edchat")...it was easier than it might sound.

I thought it was neat to see the… Continue
