Principal Entry Plan-The First 100 Days

Why Have an Entry Plan?
I began developing Entry Plans many years ago as I applied for head football coaching positions.  I always believed the plan played an instrumental role in getting me the job, and guided me successfully through the initial challenges of the job if I was fortunate enough to land it.  An Entry Plan…

Leadership Lessons from Children

I have a few core educational values close to my heart.  One is to treat each child as if they were my own, and another is to teach using stories.  I'd like to combine each of these philosophies in this post to share a story on leadership lessons I learned from my own children.

My wife and I have raised our children…

Connecting with Kids

A major concern of mine moving out of the class room and into administration was the inability to positively connect with kids on a daily basis.  As a new Principal, my realization is that I now have the…

All Kids Can SUCCEED-BE the "1"

There has been much debate in education on who is ultimately responsible for a child's learning.  In a perfect world the parents would be the child's first teachers.  They would then work closely with…

A NEW TYPE OF NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION

This will not be your typical New Year's resolution post promising to lose 20lbs, give more to charity or adopt a pet.  Although I find resolutions fun, well-intentioned and noble, I prefer to set goals regularly and live according to my values on a daily basis.  I believe actions…

What I learned from Kids Today

One of the most enjoyable parts of my job as an administrator is visiting classes.  Today I was so impressed with what I saw and learned, that I wrote a note to the class.  I share that note below.

5 "LITTLE THINGS" THAT LEAD TO SUCCESS IN YOUTH SPORTS

Although I have over 20 years coaching experience, with stints at the college and high school levels, my first year as a youth football coach has been the most rewarding. I was able to coach my son for the first time and our team won the Super Bowl! But I would like to emphasize that WINNING IS ONLY A BYPRODUCT OF DOING ALL THE "LITTLE THINGS" WELL. It is my intent to share 5 of the "Little Things" that I believe made our year Fun & Exciting.

What can Academics learn from Athletics?

I have been a student, athlete, teacher, coach, athletic director, administrator and parent.  I have benefited from an excellent education with terrific teachers and have experienced the best times of my life in the athletic arena. But I am confused by how our society places higher prestige on athletics than it does on academics. Here are some examples I have experienced and some possible solutions.  Please note that some of my solutions are tongue in cheek, but hope this post will open…

What we LEARN that State Tests Don't Measure

Visit my Blog at: bburkhead.blogspot.com

In my first two weeks of school I have witnessed things that are not assessed in state mandated tests, but are nevertheless cornerstones of a good education and strong school culture; acts of compassion, unselfishness & pride.  In a series of short stories I would like to share 3 unbelievable life lessons I've been fortunate enough to be part of in only the first 2 weeks of school.  These stories are why…

Integration with The Latest Technology in Education Field

It is with certainty that we can say that the future of education is looking very bright. Today the kids are taught so many new innovations that we adults couldn't have imagined learning at school.
