Whatever Would We Do Without the 'Black Hats'?

I was introduced to the 'Six Thinking Hats' as an Assistant Principal with PSD.  A group of administrators had been reading the book and shared their learning through a really fun bag of hats - each hat in the bag a different color.  Each hat represented collaboration in the task of looking at an existing landscape or an initiative from different perspectives.  I was particularly intrigued by the black hat.

As an administrator, the black hat can be the most challenging to work with…

"Make It Better" in Elementary and Middle School - Supporting LGBTQ Kids

I have two sons.

One is practicing in the field of law.  One is a Mechanical Engineer.

One loves hockey.  One loves cars.

One has blonde hair.  One has red hair.

One is straight.  One is gay.

I had the opportunity to attend #tedxedmonton this last weekend, and I did get a wake-up call - and a call to action.  That is what this blog is really about.

Speaker Kristopher Wells, researcher at the University of Alberta in the…

Looking Forward. . . A Personal Reflection

In the winter of the current school year, I found myself looking forward . . . and I realized that I was in the enviable position of choosing where I wanted to live.  My husband’s job was no longer tied to a specific geographic location – and my kids were making decisions about where they wanted to be. . . based on post-secondary education and career opportunities.  The world was my oyster. . .

I am a principled person, and so I began to think about what I wanted – really…

If you don't stand for something. . .

This I believe. . . with an attempt at order. . . but none are negotiable -

10.  Working with kids is a privilege.

The privilege of working with kids is just that – a privilege.  If your heart isn’t in it, you aren’t going to be effective and could probably make a better contribution elsewhere.  If your heart is in it, you are so needed – and you can make the world a better place.

9.  Together, we are better.

Parents,…

Celebrating Our Connected Youth

I have been feeling the need to celebrate our youth!  They are an amazing group of people, and I am privileged to work with them each day.

I am an Assistant Principal, and I am excited about our youth and the potential they have to contribute to this world. . . . also about the contributions they are making now.   There is every reason to be feeling ‘hope-full’ about our youth today.

Each day, when I go to work, I meet young people that are committed to making…

What are the 'Critical Tools' for Educators today?

This weekend, I invested in a set of Henkel knives.  I am in awe of these knives; I can’t imagine that we have managed to cook without them at all.  This morning, I cut some celery sticks for lunch – and they cut like butter.

Living in a world of metaphors, I thought about how we resource our schools.

Do we always identify and…

Special Education and 21st Century Learning

Why would we ever believe that anything less than providing for individual needs, interests, abilities – gifts and talents would ever be good enough for all of our children?

Throughout my career, I have been committed to children and their learning with particular focus on the inclusion of students with special needs.  I didn’t enter the profession intending that inclusion would be a focus in my career – I was blissfully unaware of exclusion. …

Catch up or recovery?

I've been intrigued by the language of "catch up" which has come from government ministers and even the Children's Commissioner. The idea that lockdown has resulted in lost learning and a widening of the gap can't be disputed but it is the solutions put forward by government which has revealed the reductive nature of the government's attitude to learning and to young people. To reduce education and learning to an accumulation of facts devoid from any contextual influence is just simply naive.…See More
