30 Ways to Promote Creativity in Your Classroom

This article provides teachers with an abundance of easy-to-implement strategies for promoting creativity in their classroom. I tried to pull out some of the best strategies that I would like to use in my own classroom.

1. Use emotional connections. Research shows that the best creativity instruction ties into the emotions of the learner. For example, giving students a project that ties into solving an issue within their community (ex: homelessness) can help sprout creativity since students can make an emotional connection to the topic.

2. Creativity flourishes in a "congenial environment," in other words, creative thinking needs to be shared and validated by others in a socially supportive community. It is up to us as teachers to create an environment where our students feel safe to share their ideas and let their creativity shine through without feeling self-conscious.

3. Use models in your classroom that promote creativity, such as the Incubation Model. It has 3 parts:

- Heightening Anticipation- make connections between the classroom and students' real lives.

- Deepen Expectations- brainstorm and create opportunities to solve a novel problem

- Keep it Going- find ways to extend learning opportunities at home or in the community

4. Creativity builds confidence- students take ownership of their own learning, so it is important to utilize that as a teacher and allow students to create their own projects and play an active role in their learning

5. Find ways to incorporate and integrate art, music, and culture- recent reports have determined that creativity is a central force that shapes our culture, so it is important for teachers to tie these aspects into their lessons.
