Book Review, Dark Light (The Dark Light Series #1)

4 hearts

I've been reading more contemporary romances rather than paranormal, lately, but this one mixes both.  The first half of the book was a bit slow for me and my rating started to decrease, but I got hooked in the second half and read it straight through to the ending.

Gabriella turns 20 in this book and she thinks of herself as a mediocre community college student.  She doesn't think that anything in her life has ever been exciting.  All of this changes on her birthday.  Gabriella has a mocha complexion, so she has always known that she was adopted by her parents, but she knows nothing of her heritage.  The night of her birthday, she is given a journal written by her birth mother, who was friends with her parents.  She finds out that she is the product of Light and Dark.  Her mother was a Light (good) enchantress (witch) and her father was a Dark (evil) warlock or shadow.  They died because of her creation and she was given to Donna and Chris so that she would be protected.  Both forces want her, as she is unique.  Her life had a spell put on it so that she would be mediocre and not stand out and draw attention to herself.  She is to ascend on her 21st birthday and has to make a decision as to who she will be.

Of course, as a girl who is already dealing with feelings of doubt about her life, this just adds to it.  She wants a distraction and finds just that in the über attractive billionaire, Dorian.  Now, a bunch of red flags go up and if you were given a journal about your life wouldn't you read it in its entirety?? Oh, Gabrielle I wanted to shake her and rolled my eyes a lot because she is so naive and just plain doesn't want to see what is around her.  I know she is trying to escape, but her naiveté caused a  lot of readers to be frustrated.  I read that she grows up a lot in book 2, so I'm looking forward to that.  I think that this book laid down a good base for the second book which is out now.  I believe that this is a trilogy.
