The personal learning network for educators
I work at a school that houses the severely disabled students for the entire county. We talk to our regular education students to prepare them for what they may see or hear. The younger special needs classes are in the same building we are in so we share the hall, go to lunch together, and attend Music, Art, and the Library together.
I have found an eBook that can be read on a Kindle, Nook, I pad, or any other e reader device. The name of the book is "Cougar Cub Tales: I'm Just Like You". It is about a cougar cub brother and sister who encounter a creature very unlike themselves. They are not sure about whether or not the blind bobcat is a real cougar cub.
By the end of the tale, they realize that they really are the same, overlooking their physical differences as they include their new friend. It is a timeless story that deals with the everyday issue of intolerance, especially regarding physical difference and disability.
This book would be a great character education lesson for Kindergarten to 2nd grade. If you have I Pads in your school this would be a great center for students to read on their own or in a small group. It could even be shown on a Promethean or Smart Board.
