The personal learning network for educators
It is the first day of school. A kindergarten teacher is calling the names of her students as any other year. She keeps repeating the name Johnny. No response. As she concludes her roster, one child remains nameless. It is Johnny. However, he does not know his first name, because everyone at home calls him by his nickname-J-Boy.
As teachers and principals talk about what is needed to help prepare students better for first grade, the topic of vocabulary and conversation emerges. Does anyone talk with children using complete sentences or proper language? What levels of vocabulary are the children exposed with actively before entering kindergarten?
These are questions that have been the topic of the changes in instruction in for the primary grades in my district. What is happening in yours?
