Effective Ways to Improve Your Writing

Blog post. An important email message. Business report. Essay! Do these words give you the chills? It’s probably because you’re not confident in your writing skills. Through the words we write, we express our opinions, points of view, and character. If we’re not that good at writing, we don’t manage to leave a good impression.

Bad news: not all of us were born as great writers. Good news: we can improve this skill. How exactly can you become a better writer? There are few techniques that will support that goal.

  1. 1.      Start With the Basics

Good grammar and sentence structure are the foundations of proper writing. You can’t write great content without these basics. You may express your ideas, but the bad grammar will make them look silly.

  1. 2.      Practice, Practice, Practice!

Some people have a natural gift for writing. The rest of us have to practice. That’s the shortcut that will turn you into a more confident writer. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.

Write more papers, blog posts, or personal diary entries. When you’re ready to share your skills, you can become part of Reddit’s Writing Prompts.

It’s important to make the practice a leisure activity. Pick topics you like and explore them further. You’ll be learning new things and expressing strong opinions. Day after day, you’ll be falling in love with the writing practice based on that attitude.

  1. 3.      Find Inspiration in Reading

You want to become a better writer because you need to maintain a blog for your business? Then read blog posts! Figure out what makes great posts great. It’s the simple, convincing style, examples that prove the arguments, and short paragraphs that keep the reader’s attention.

There’s a problem with that approach: even if you don’t plagiarize the content, the audience will recognize you copied the style. They won’t be interested in reading copycats.

It will take a lot of practice and experimenting before you discover your style of expression. It’s important to come up with unique ideas and translate them into words without being guided by the style of another writer. It sounds like the hardest thing ever after all that reading you’ve done, but it’s easier than you think. You already have a unique personality; you just need to express it through your content.

  1. 6.      Plan Before You Write

Even if it’s a plain email you’re about to send, make an outline. It will keep you within an easy-to-follow structure and won’t let you make digressions. Plus, it’s impossible to forget a point when you have an outline.

If you’re working on a paper, blog post, or business document, outlining is inevitable. When you have a plan, you’ll only need to fill in the gaps. An outline is much easier to handle than a blank page.

  1. 7.      Remember: The First Draft Is Only a Draft

The word draft means “preliminary version of a piece of writing.” It will need quite a bit of work before you turn it into a piece you can share with others. Never skip the editing stage! The first draft will be flawed, and that’s okay. No matter how good or bad it is, there’s always space for improvement.

Take a break before you start editing, so you’ll approach the draft with new energy and enthusiasm. Improve the flaws in the logical structure and make sure the grammar is flawless.

 

Writing may be a torturous process, but it’s beautiful at the same time. It gives you an opportunity to share your opinions, knowledge, and viewpoints with the world. The more you practice, the better you become at it. The better you get, the more you love writing!
