This is the most common question, I observed the students usually have. We all know how to learn math, but what has to be done for learning math according to the common core standards. It’s quite organized once you follow it. Common core standards have been introduced for each grade, they comprise a list of topics which are expected to be learned for the given school year. The best part about common core is, that the curriculum remains same for almost all the states throughout the United States. This means no matter which state you are currently residing in, if you have learned math according to common core standards, then you are on the same page as any other student from a different state. Let’s look at some examples to follow, how math can be learned according to common core standards.
Let’s start with the most basic topic expected to be learned in grade 4, Fractions! If you are in grade 4 then according to common core state standards there are certain concepts you are expected to know by the end of the school year. Adding and subtracting fractions with common denominator is one of such topic. Let’s look at some relevant questions:
Add the two given fractions. Find the value of 7/9 + 1/9?
Here in the given question, both the fractions have a common denominator, which is 9.The fractions with the same denominators are called like fractions.
Since the denominators are the same the numerators can be added. Hence all we do is 7 + 1 in the numerator. That’s quite easy, what is 7 + 1 = 8!
Now try to follow the steps as mentioned below:
So, this gives the solution for the sum of the fractions 7/9 + 1/9 = 8/9.
Taking a step further we learn that grade 4, common core standards also included word problems. Let’s take a closer look at one such question in the same topic of adding and subtraction fractions word problems.
Sarah brought a chocolate cake for her birthday. After the birthday party, there was only 3/7 of the cake left, if Sarah ate 2/7 of the remaining cake, how much cake is still remaining?
The amount of cake remaining after the birthday party = 3/7.
The amount of the remaining cake Sarah ate = 2/7.
Now, to calculate the amount of cake left we need to subtract the two given fractions 3/7 and 2/7. We observe that both the fractions have 7 as the common denominator.
Since the denominator of the fractions are the same, subtract the numerators. This gives 3-2 =1.
For a better idea take a look at the diagram below.
The common core standards take a step further for grade 5. It’s nothing but an addition to what has been learned in grade 4. Let us take a look as this as well. We have just observed that grade 4 covers adding and subtraction fraction with common denominators. In grade 5, the student is expected to learn a step further, adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. Here is one basic example in grade 5 topic about adding fractions.
Add the two give fractions. Find the value of 1/3 + 1/4?
Here in the given question, both the fractions have different denominators, which are 3 and 4.The fractions with the different denominators are called unlike fractions.
Since the denominators are not the same, the LCM need to be calculated to get the equivalent fractions.
The LCM (Least common multiple) for 3 and 4 equals to 12. This can be applied to the given fractions as mentioned below:
Now, observe the fractions 4/12 and 3/12 have common denominator of 12. Since the denominators are the same value the numerators can be added. Once again, we know 3+ 4 = 7.
