The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

I would like to hear from those of you who have instructional coaches collaborating with the teachers at your school. In your opinion, what are some of the tasks they complete or guide others to accomplish that have the greatest impact? Those of you who believe you work side-by-side with a tremendously inspirational instructional coach I wonder if you would share a brief story about this person?

I would like to thank all of you for responding to the question about instructional coaches. I am beginning to see how important the personality style of the individual is when they are working toward guiding others. Would anyone else have something they would like to share about instructional coaches? I certainly think it is a huge improvement over the "sit and get" professional development I had for so many years!

My coach is always on the look-out for the "coachable" moment. During the busyness of each day she finds a way to engage teacher's in conversation about student achievement. She also understands that her job is to first build relationships with teachers and to make sure that even the most reluctant teacher considers her an option when they need help.

I have been privileged to work with Dr. David Jacobson for the last three years in my school in Los Angeles. He started with me as a new teacher who was wet behind the ears and literally trained me according to my strengths. He watch what I was doing in my 6th grade classroom and then work with me to make sure that I could do it better and effectively. As I advanced, we would work on more advanced things. This past year the administration of my school told me that I graduated, but I pushed to keep working with him and we spent the year working on turning my classroom into a DI classroom. It made a tremendous difference!! To have someone who watches your classroom on a weekly basis and then can sit with you and analyze it by going over the play by play is an amazing thing. When I made a Wii whiteboard in my class we sat through working out what the advantages were and how to use it...and what the disadvantages were.

More Than a Sport: A Look at Scootering’s Evolution

Too many people do not have a clear idea about what is a Scooter; and much less than there is a sport based on it. Besides, it is a sport that has evolved a lot from its beginning, but if you do not know too much about the sport is hard to see it as more than a kid game. However, this sport is more than just kids and young people making scooter tricks in a square; scootering is a kind of culture and a lifestyle that has more than 20 years growing to become what it is today. For this reason, we…See More
