JTHS Innovation Domination: Susan Graham aka Senorita #edtech!

We're starting a new focus within our blog that will highlight the innovative thoughts, ideas, and lessons of the teachers at JTHS.  The goal is to share the stories and experiences of  those who are utilizing our 1:1 laptop initiative to transform teaching and learning in their classroom.  Innovation and creativity in education is contagious, so... you can think of our blog as a big sneeze.  Visit this site from time to time and look for this image along with the JTHS Innovation Domination headings to take a peek at your colleagues are up to.

If you're not on Twitter yet, Susie Graham is a great resource when you're ready.  We've had countless interactions with her through many forms of social media, and she recently shared some solid gold thoughts about her vision of technology in our district and a phenomenal goal that she's set for the upcoming school year.  Here's Senorita Graham's perspective on technology in education...

I like the idea of the tech being invisible, I read somewhere about not looking at it as some magical motivational tool: you don't expect to be motivated by something that's part of your everyday's what you do with it that's motivating. Just having a cell phone myself isn't fun, but it is fun when I am somewhere and I can take a picture and send it to someone and say look at this! Or when I need to share something and I don't need a fax machine anymore, I can send a Dropbox link , etc.. the fun is in what you do, and how you problem solve. You can't expect kids to be motivated just because they are using the computer or the internet, they use those things everyday. A boring assignment is a boring assignment...on paper or on the computer.

My goal this year is for students to not realize that having the computers is a big deal, other than being appreciative of them. If someone were to ask them, do you use your computers in your Spanish class or how often do you use your computers in your Spanish class or when do you use them...I want them to furrow their brows and stutter...uh, um,...I don't know. We use them all the time for all different stuff. Just like in real life. We don't pay attention to when, why and how we use our cell phones or our laptops or our Kindles. We use them all the time, for all different stuff!!!

Thank you Susie for letting us share your thoughts with the district!  Please feel free to share your stories with us or nominate a teacher who you know.
