Level Up! SMEDU chats start today. Topic: the Social Media Global Education Connection Project

“Nothing is as powerful as an idea whose time has come” Victor Hugo

Such has been the case with social media. In less than a decade, social media has come to impact the planet’s population, businesses, groups and governments: how we work, learn, lead and live. It is not surprising that the industry’s trade association, The Social Media Club (SMC), has grown to over 200 chapters and 300,000 members in the past five years. Nor is it surprising that relationships between the industry and higher education would develop to foster professional development paths, programs and degrees. Two years ago, SMC launched the SMC EDU initiative (also know as the SMC Education Connection) to develop this relationship.

During this time, social media has grown beyond being a new profession to becoming an important base skill for professionals and an educated populace. At the same time, academia has been undergoing significant change, partially driven by economic conditions and the impacts of new information technology, including social media. The scale and scope of needs by higher education around social media has grown immensely. In response, we are launching an expanded project: the Social Media Global Education Connection Project (SMGECP).

The project’s mission: “To provide leadership, guidance, facilitation and resources to students, educators, and administrators in educational organizations that will promote and enable competent usage of social media by the world’s citizens, workforces, educational institutions, and societies.”

We are a non-profit global organization. The primary orientation of SMGECP is with higher educational organizations (of any type) and their constituent groups, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, local communities, trade associations, government agencies, etc. Our focus is around social media: teaching, learning, training, using, researching, certifying, etc.

Some examples of the activities we will facilitate and support include: student social media chapters, publishing and pursuing research, curriculum and program standards, code of ethics, best practices, community projects, and workforce development.

We will operating and communicating via a number of platforms. On Twitter, we will hold two chats on Wednesdays. The first chat will be held at Noon EST/ 9 AM PT and the second chat will be held at 9 PM EST/ 6 PM PT. Our intent is to provide reasonable times for global participation in one of the chats as well as two options for those with conflicting commitments. We will be using the hash tag #SMEDU for our chats and as the new twitter channel for the Social Media Global Education Connection Project.

For the time being, we will discontinue using the hash tag #SMCEDU and encourage twitter posts be made to the new #SMEDU hash tag. In our future plans, we will repurpose the #SMCEDU hash tag, but doing so now could lead to undue confusion.

Join us for our kickoff chats, Wednesday, August 10th, at noon or 9 PM EST to learn more about this project and the coming year.

If you interested in participating in the Social Media Global Education Connection Project, be it starting a student social media chapter, assisting with chats and channels, publishing research, collaborating on curriculum, etc., send an email to Terry at socialmediaclub.org.
