The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

Nearly 3 years since my last confession, no sorry, blog

It has been 3 years since my last confession/ blog. I have had several enriching opportunities. I hold on to my involvement in establishing a Special Assistance School as a landmark in my teaching career. I learned the value of educational leadership from within the teaching team. The opportunity to design a whole school curriculum that was innovative and made sense to students who were at both ends of the spectrum but at the school because of life circumstance. This challenge is the turning point in my career as a teacher. I could see my ideas could come to fruition. I had always dreamed of fully integrating the Key Learning Areas so students can see links and connections between subjects and lifelong learning does not occur in silos. Traditionally this occurs in secondary schools. Students can see the Field Experience to the beach is not a science excursion only; it is also a Geography, Aboriginal Studies, Mathematics and English experience. Careful curriculum planning allows this to happen; but collaboration, team management, leadership and passion for giving students opportunities to see a holistic approach to teaching and learning makes it successful.

The following teaching assignment was back in a traditional school situation. I battled to engage some students for the whole time I was employed there. With my HSC classes, the time I invested in scaffolding, briefing, debriefing, giving whole class and individual feedback, after hours assistance paid great dividends. After a lot of hard work from the students and myself as a team to perform as a cohort to the best of our ability paid great dividends. The HSC results were outstanding. In one subject 10 mark difference between the top HSC mark and the bottom mark with a median mark of 81; another subject the median mark was 74 and 80. This is was a proud moment. On reflection, day-to-day I went through the motions of going from lesson to lesson, day to day, with little encouragement or knocked down because of the culture on staff who were not interested in best practice or currency because it was too hard for change.

Today, I want to give a community the best I can give, demonstrate and lead current and best practice. Connect and learn from others in my Professional Learning Network. Students deserve the opportunity to learn how to process real world experiences that are simulated in our learning space and then experienced later which I can provide. Eventually a school executive will see what I can offer their school community and the students in it.
