Online Learning Courses To Replace Traditional Learning: How True?

Institutions imparting higher education are being buoyed up to adopt online learning to meet the students' need, by the rapidly rising number of learners who are enrolling in online learning courses throughout the world. A recent research organised by the Babson Survey Research Group on online education in the United States, shows that more than 5.8 million, 5,828,826 to be precise, students are engaged in online learning worldwide and interestingly enough that's a 263% increase over the past decade. The figures are undeniably staggering.

Now let's take a closer look at the reasons behind the popularity of this technology-infused learning mode. Today's advanced learners are keen enough to take their career to a new level by embracing every possible learning mode that is best fit for them. And online learning, according to the learners and as well as the educators, is the smartest and easiest way to adopt. There are, in fact, several reasons behind this.

Online learning courses are popular among the students because of its flexible study schedule. They can engage in their studies whenever and wherever they want. Moreover, a student can enrol in courses of their own choice without investing much money and time. It also empowers the learners to tailor the process of learning. Those are the reasons learners are participating in online learning courses with an increased rate of 3.9 percent per year (alone in the US) or a total of 217,275 students, to be exact.

Online Learning: Myth And Reality

In spite of the popular notion that online learning is predominantly for the younger minds, it serves the purpose of catering knowledge to upgrade and upskill the career for adult learners and working professionals at an utmost level. As research shows that 75 percent of American undergraduate students today are at least 25 years old and among them 85 percent adult learners opted for online learning to further their study.

What's different in online course modules in relation to that of traditional learning?

The course material offered by online learning institutes are evaluated by specialised educators and thus are of high quality. This relatively new mode of education vouches for interactive learning where students are rendered competitive yet collaborative learning environment. A majority of students find this procedure effective and as a result, more than one-fourth of US students are now enrolling in at least one online learning course.

Is traditional learning starting to lose its monopoly?

Well, as technology continues to infuse in our lives, education, like every other aspect, is experiencing a profound and notable transformation. The need of career-oriented learning is increasing like never before. And traditional learning, to be honest, is unable to fulfill the learners requirement. As a result, they are relying on online learning courses which promise them to deliver a better career and brighter future. As to quote Tuan Nguyen,

“The physical “brick and mortar” classroom is starting to lose its monopoly as the place of learning. The Internet and the World Wide Web have made significant changes to almost all aspects of our lives ranging from a global economy, personal, and professional networks to sources of information, news, and learning. The Internet has made online learning possible, and many researchers and educators are interested in online learning to enhance and improve student learning outcomes while combating the reduction in resources, particularly in higher education”.

So I accidentally blew up on Twitter last week.

National Teacher Day was May 9th, and I wanted to recognize that in a small way. I had a graphic that I created for a previous Twitter Chat, so I opened it back up, changed the top, and posted it with two small sentences and hash tagged it with #NationalTeachersDay. I tagged my usual tribe in the graphic so they would re-tweet it for me; they’re awesome like that. After that, I went about my day.…See More
