The Educator's PLN

The personal learning network for educators

This is my first blog post on The Educator's PLN ... I thank you for not closing this window!

My name is Christal Thompson and I have taught for 10 years. Currently I teach "high octane" high school sophomores through seniors computer programming. Prior to teaching I was a computer analyst/programmer and systems designer for 15 years.

I am just about finished with my M.Ed. (only two weeks left!) in Curriculum & Instruction - Technology. For my Master's Practicum I decided to attempt to implement social media in my school. Radical ... but not new ...

This is a radical idea because the teachers in my school do not necessarily embrace technology in the classroom. I have had comments such as "technology and I do not get along" or "I tend to break computers". Of course there are the technology "go getters", but there are also those who are not.

What was my radical idea? I am implementing a Professional Learning Network that promotes technology understanding, usage, tips, and techniques in our high school classrooms. This network is a safe place for our teachers to "look up" answers to questions, ask questions, watch videos on how to use certain technologies, and comment on experiences in the classroom, The goal is for this Learning Network to be our "storage place" for our technology learnings at our school. Radical ... but not new ...

I started out small. At the beginning of this school year I began sending out on Tuesdays a weekly e-mail called, STHS Tech Tip of the Week. These were little hints, tips, videos, and "how tos" that were intended to be helpful to our teachers and staff. Now I am upping the game by creating our new Professional Learning Network. I am almost ready to implement and "go live'. This is exciting! I invite you to take a look at:
