The personal learning network for educators

Resilience is a buzz word which has been used (and abused) for years. Football teams have been described as being resilient. The same word has been used for refugees. Hardly the same word really.

One thing about the word fascinates me though. Can it be taught or is it inherent?

The recent and not so recent research below seems to suggest that it is probably both. Some people just seem to be more resilient to the knocks that life brings and have bouncebackability. Others struggle with the basics of life.

Some children and adults are pre-disposed to describing challenges as "nighmares" and "disaster" or "major."  This self talk reinforces the notion that somehow life is fixed. Outcomes are fixed and that there is little that one can do to change it.

In time I believe that this self talk not only affects your mindset but your very health and can lead to depression and absence from work.

However it is my contention that it can be taught through the growth mindset work which we carry out in school.

If you teach the language of "can do" or "life as a continuous journey of learning and growth" then you reinforce the positive self talk that is critical to taking charge of your life. There is little then that you can't do and that even includes believing that you are well and that if you are ill, that you can get better more quickly.

I wouldn't suggest that this can happen overnight but would take in some cases with adults, years to unlearn the negative fixed outcomes that you once believed was the case.

The first steps are to eradicate the language of fixed mindset, the language of somehow life being your master and it not mattering what you do as you'll always end up on the losing side. So words and phrases such as "nightmare, not fair, it's bound to end up that way, it's me!," need to be replaced by "will do, can do, I might not get that job yet but with each interview I get nearer!"

Not only will this build your resilient response to life and life's challenges (and that's what they are, challenges to meet and overcome) it will help your state of mental health and physical health.

Integration with The Latest Technology in Education Field

It is with certainty that we can say that the future of education is looking very bright. Today the kids are taught so many new innovations that we adults couldn't have imagined learning at school. They are also given exposure to more practical lessons. Integration with the latest technology and the accessibility to global platforms have made the industry take a whole new perspective towards imparting knowledge to students. Though the current generation is much advanced and keep up with the…See More
