Solving Word Problems In 7 Simple Steps

Some students are good at solving math equations and arithmetic problems, but they still struggle with word problems. The hardest thing about the word problem is taking English words and translating them into mathematical equations. Word problem required excellent reading and translating skill. Sometimes its easy to find which math is involved in the problem, but figuring out the actual equation is hard to understand. To help you solve word problems, some easy steps are given bellow.

Step 1: Read the question twice, don't try to solve the problem if you haven't understand the question. When you're reading out the problem write down these three things.

1. What is given?
2. What math will apply in?
3. What you need to find?

Step 2: Draw a rough diagram of the problem which make your problem more accurate. Make sure the image which you draw should match with the real problem.

Step 3: Use few variable to make your word problem as a mathematical equation. Make sure you have the same number of equations as you have variables.

Step 4: Translate English words into mathematical equations. Keep in mind sometimes the English terms stated different from the mathematical terms.

Translation of mathematical term into English terms:

Step 5:
Re-translate the mathematical equation into the given word problem. The translation will not be the same, but the meaning should be exactly same as the original problem. If the meaning is not same it means equation is wrong.

Step 6: Once you get the right equations, solve them using mathematical rules and find out the solution.

Step 7: Recheck your solution, put your solution into the original equation. If it satisfies the equation then your solution is correct. If you do not get the correct solution, then again go to the 3rd step.

Important Tips:

• Good knowledge of basic number sense would help you to solve word problems.

• You can take Pre Algebra Homework Help for better understanding of word problem.

• Practice as many as word problem you can.
