Over the past six years I have frequently visited Singapore to teach about
cognition and learning. Over the course of this period it has become
increasingly clear that even as the United States aim to change our
system of education to achieve high standards - standards long achieved
by countries such as Singapore - Singapore has embarked on a new and
very different path to prepare its students for the globalized knowledge
economy. Intrigued by this striking divergence in policies and
practices, I have tried to conceptualize the key differences in a short
article. The article also describes how a greater emphasis on the
cognitive development of students' learning ability lends critical
support for the aims pursued in both the United States and Singapore.
