The personal learning network for educators

Today I set-up my synchoronous and asynchronous tools.  I am using my UNA school email as my asynchronous tool and skype as my synchronous tool.  You can email me at gwilson1@una.edu and my skype account is gwilson7107.  I'm very familiar with the email but the skype tool is very new to me.  It is going to take some time to get to used to it.  Working from home, I'm limited by my HughesNet internet in what I can do with regard to video but I will try to make the best of it.

I have found a great way to use my cellphone/smartphone in an educational way.  This is something I actually have done for a 1st grade class.  Preparing for a phonics lesson for the 1st grade class.  I found this video clip:  http://youtu.be/7fb3Pdt8kxg.   It is titled, When Two Vowels Go Walking.  In a past lesson, I learned that only certain clips could be used by someone who wasn't a full-time teacher in the classroom, and when I was ready to present the video to the class, it was blocked by the school system's filter.  However, I have found this method to work effectively.  My smartphone has a micro-sd storage card.  I simply found the clip using my smartphone online, and saved it to my storage card.  Then, on the day I was to present the lesson, I connected my phone using the usb cable to the teacher's laptop.  When it came time to play the clip, I accessed it from my phone and presented it to the classroom.  The students were very engaged, and it worked well to help me present it to the classroom around the filter.

Whatever Would We Do Without the 'Black Hats'?

I was introduced to the 'Six Thinking Hats' as an Assistant Principal with PSD.  A group of administrators had been reading the book and shared their learning through a really fun bag of hats - each hat in the bag a different color.  Each hat represented collaboration in the task of looking at an existing landscape or an initiative from different perspectives.  I was particularly intrigued by the black hat.As an administrator, the black hat can be the most challenging to work with - especially…See More
