For some time now I have believed very strongly that the profession should help to regulate and support itself.

On Friday Dame Alison Peacock from the Chartered College, Sir Kevan Collins from EEF and I presented to 50+ school leaders in the North West on a vision for more autonomy for schools and more self regulation.

I covered the outcome of the NAHT Accountability Commission which talks about school leaders stepping up and taking responsibility for themselves and their peers as quite simply, Ofsted can't do the job they were created to do on 52% of their previous funding. If we're serious about having more autonomy then we need to speak with an authoritative voice which is where the Chartered College come in. Having Chartered Teacher status places us in a position where we are respected for our opinions and views as qualified authorities on education in the same way as the Chartered College of Medicine status bestows on Doctors.

How we then use the information from the EEF and other evidenced based practice to justify the decisions and strategies we make and use in school is critical in answering queries from peers and Ofsted about the direction we are taking the school in.

The Accountability Commission report is a must read for all school leaders and talks about us taking responsibility for each other and helping all the schools in our area to improve by using robust peer assessment. For too long the drive for a higher Ofsted grade has been the pre-occupying driver for schools. The commissions report allows us to re-adjust the perspective and refocus on what we're doing and why we're doing it in our schools so that our learners make as much progress as possible and become fabulous and well adjusted citizens for the future. Peer school leaders, many of whom are already trained inspectors, will help us to see the wood beyond the trees and when we are eventually re-inspected Ofsted can only comment on the tremendous progress and fabulous young people we are creating.

Clearly we have all been scarred by rogue inspectors and I'm one of those who has experienced that, but that doesn't make all accountability bad.
