Understanding CIPA to Fight the Filter

I've created this SlideShare presentation to explain the Children's Internet Pro..., the federal law known as CIPA that is the reason why many schools filter Internet access, many to an absurd degree.

I express the view that (i) the FCC expects a good faith and reasonable approach to filtering, but has no interest in policing the effectiveness or appropriateness of any reasonable filtering approach, (ii) teachers absolutely should be permitted to override filters to enable access to any sites, other than clear "adult" sites, and (iii) overly restrictive filters can violate a student's constitutional rights.

Amen!! So many schools are blocked, locked and filtered that real use of technology resources is not even possible. Teachers should not be allowed in the classroom if they can't be trusted with a filter override.
