Welcoming the New Year with a Slow and Steady Fire

I’m a big fan of Carly Simon. I have been for many years. I love her music, admire her talent and have been stunned by the honest ways she’s shared her life’s journey.

On this new year’s eve, I was feeling nostalgic and was searching for music on my iPod that would suit my mood.

I found it.

This song by Simon spoke to me and I knew I had to share it as my end of the year post. I’m glad I was able to find this video rendition of the song, The Stuff that Dreams are Made Of, and have chosen to share it today for a few reasons:

  • It encouraged me to seek fulfillment in the simple things.
  • It spoke to my desire to keep dreaming and seeking my hearts desire.
  • It reminded me that anything worth something, takes time to develop.

Before I welcome 2013 with hope and expectation, I bid farewell to 2012 with gratitude and thanks. It was a good year. This year brought growth and connection in my personal and professional life that I’m very grateful for. The encouragement I received from my family, friends, and professional learning network, to continue to seek my passion in my work, made 2012 memorable.

Thank you so very much to all of you.

Take a look around now

Change the direction

Adjust the tuning
Try a new translation
Don’t look at your man in the same old way
Take a new picture
Just because you don’t see shooting stars
Doesn’t mean it isn’t perfect
can’t you see…

It’s the stuff that dreams are made of
It’s the slow and steady fire
It’s the stuff that dreams are made of
It’s your heart and soul’s desire
It’s the stuff that dreams are made of

So what’s this about your best friend?
She’s got a brand new shiny boy
And they’re moving out to Malibu
To play with all his pretty toys
And you feel closed in by the same four walls
The same old conversation
With the same old guy you’ve know for years
But use your imagination
And you will see….

It’s the stuff that dreams are made of
It’s the slow and steady fire
It’s the stuff that dreams are made of
It’s your heart and soul’s desire
It’s the stuff that dreams are made of

What if the Prince on the horse in your fairytale
Is right here in disguise
And what if the stars you’ve been reaching so high for
Are shining in his eyes

Don’t look at yourself in the same old way
Take another picture
Shoot the stars off in your own backyard
Don’t look any further
And you will see!

It’s the stuff that dreams are made of….

May you bring in the new year with a slow…but steady fire. Enjoy your celebrations and let me know what you’re looking forward to in 2013!
